Fiber Uplink Connectivity
The C9800-L-F-K9 is specifically the fiber-uplink version of the Catalyst 9800-L. Cisco specifies two 10G/Multigigabit fiber uplinks for this model, allowing the controller to connect to compatible enterprise switching infrastructure using supported fiber transceivers. The exact SFP/SFP+ module and cabling configuration should be selected according to the required speed, fiber type, distance, and connected switch.
Centralized Wireless Management
The Catalyst 9800-L provides centralized control of compatible Cisco wireless access points. Network administrators can use the controller for WLAN configuration, wireless security, access-point management, mobility, monitoring, and policy enforcement across the wireless environment.
Wireless Capacity
The base Catalyst 9800-L supports up to 250 access points and 5,000 clients with up to 5 Gbps throughput. Cisco's optional LIC-C9800L-PERF Performance license increases the supported capacity to up to 500 access points and 10,000 clients, with up to 10 Gbps throughput under the applicable performance conditions.
Deployment Modes
The Catalyst 9800-L supports multiple wireless deployment architectures, including Centralized, Cisco FlexConnect, and fabric deployment modes. The appropriate architecture depends on the organization's campus, branch, WAN, and wireless design requirements.
Licensing Information
The C9800-L-F-K9 is the wireless controller hardware PID, rather than a standalone Foundation License PID. Cisco's current ordering information identifies C9800-L-F-K9 as the base fiber-uplink controller and lists LIC-C9800L-PERF as the optional Catalyst 9800-L Performance license. Cisco also lists LIC-C9800-DTLS-K9 as an optional DTLS license.
Compatibility
The controller supports compatible Cisco wireless access points and interoperates with applicable Cisco wireless infrastructure. Cisco documentation lists support for Aironet 802.11ac Wave 1 and Wave 2 access points as well as Cisco Catalyst 9100 802.11ax access points. Actual compatibility depends on the controller software release and access-point model.
