The Cisco CWDM-OADM1-1490 is a passive Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) Optical Add/Drop Multiplexer module designed to add and drop the 1490nm optical channel in a CWDM network. It provides dual single-channel add/drop functionality, allowing the same 1490nm wavelength to be added or dropped in both directions of an optical ring.

Unlike an active Ethernet optical transceiver, the CWDM-OADM1-1490 is a passive optical networking component. It does not generate, receive or electrically convert Ethernet signals. Instead, it routes the 1490nm optical wavelength within a compatible Cisco CWDM passive optical system.

1490nm CWDM Optical Add/Drop

The Cisco CWDM-OADM1-1490 is specifically designed for the 1490nm CWDM channel. In a CWDM ring, it can add a local 1490nm service onto the optical network and drop the corresponding 1490nm service from the network. Other CWDM wavelengths are passed through the OADM.

Dual Single-Channel OADM Architecture

Cisco's dual single-channel OADM architecture allows the 1490nm channel to be added and dropped in both directions of an optical ring. Cisco specifies two network fiber strands for the OADM and a maximum of two Gigabit Ethernet links in this architecture.

1490nm Violet Color Coding

Cisco uses color coding to identify CWDM wavelengths. The 1490nm CWDM-OADM1-1490 uses a violet connector color code, matching the corresponding Cisco 1490nm CWDM optical transceiver equipment.

Optical Monitoring

The CWDM-OADM1-1490 includes a monitor port that can be connected to an optical power meter or optical spectrum analyzer. This allows technicians to monitor optical performance and troubleshoot the CWDM network without directly interrupting the primary optical path. Cisco specifies a maximum monitor insertion loss of 23dB.

Optical Insertion Loss

Compatibility

The Cisco CWDM-OADM1-1490 is intended for use within Cisco CWDM passive optical systems and compatible CWDM chassis. Cisco documentation identifies the CWDM-CHASSIS-2 as a compatible 2-slot, 1RU chassis for the CWDM passive system.
