Unlike an optical transceiver such as a Cisco CWDM SFP, the CWDM-OADM1-1470 is a passive optical networking component. It does not generate, receive or electrically convert Ethernet signals. Instead, it works with compatible Cisco CWDM transceivers to route the 1470nm wavelength through a CWDM optical infrastructure.

1470nm CWDM Optical Add/Drop
The CWDM-OADM1-1470 is specifically designed for the 1470nm CWDM channel. In a CWDM ring, it can add a local 1470nm service onto the optical network and drop the corresponding 1470nm service from the network. Other CWDM wavelengths are passed through the OADM.
Dual Single-Channel OADM Architecture
Cisco's dual single-channel OADM architecture allows the 1470nm channel to be added and dropped in both directions of an optical ring. This supports bidirectional CWDM ring deployments while using two network fiber strands.
Compatibility with Cisco CWDM Transceivers

Compatibility
The CWDM-OADM1-1470 is intended for use within Cisco CWDM passive optical systems and compatible CWDM chassis. Cisco documentation states that two OADM modules can be installed in the Cisco CWDM-CHASSIS-2 2-slot chassis.
The OADM should be paired with a compatible 1470nm CWDM GBIC or CWDM SFP on the equipment side. Optical components should be matched by wavelength and the fiber topology should be engineered according to the complete CWDM link budget.
Important: Passive OADM, Not a Transceiver
Although this product is sometimes listed online as an optical transceiver module, the Cisco CWDM-OADM1-1470 is actually a passive optical add/drop module. It does not contain an Ethernet transmitter or receiver and does not provide an independent 1Gbps or 10Gbps electrical interface. Its purpose is wavelength routing within a CWDM optical network.
