HPE Smart Array P440ar AROC Daughterboard RAID Controller – 749796-001

The HPE Smart Array P440ar Adaptive RAID On Chip (AROC) Daughterboard, part number 749796-001, is an enterprise SAS RAID controller designed for compatible HPE ProLiant Gen9 servers. HPE identifies 749796-001 specifically as the Smart Array P440ar – Adaptive RAID On Chip (AROC) daughterboard controller.

The P440ar provides two internal x4 mini-SAS ports, 2GB of embedded Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC), and support for up to 12Gb/s SAS transfer rates. Unlike a conventional PCIe plug-in RAID card, the P440ar is a flexible Smart Array daughterboard designed for compatible HPE server system-board configurations.

Technical Specifications

HPE Smart Array P440ar Storage Controller

The P440ar is an HPE Flexible Smart Array controller intended for internal SAS/SATA storage. Its eight physical links are provided through two x4 internal mini-SAS ports, allowing compatible server configurations to connect multiple internal storage drives. HPE specifies 12Gb/s SAS and 6Gb/s SATA technology and supports mixing SAS and SATA drives on the same controller.

2GB Flash-Backed Write Cache

The controller incorporates 2GB of Flash-Backed Write Cache (FBWC). HPE's P440ar documentation identifies the cache as 72-bit DDR3-1866 FBWC and provides write-back and read-ahead caching capabilities.

The 749796-001 controller itself does not include the Smart Storage Battery. HPE explicitly lists the battery separately and states that FBWC cannot be ordered separately from the controller assembly.

RAID and HBA Capabilities

The P440ar supports multiple hardware RAID configurations including RAID 0, 1, 10, 5, 50, 6, 60 and 10 ADM. It can also operate in HBA mode when direct storage presentation is required by the operating environment.

• RAID 0 for striping
• RAID 1 and RAID 10 for mirroring
• RAID 5 and RAID 50 for parity-based storage
• RAID 6 and RAID 60 for dual-parity configurations
• RAID 10 ADM for advanced data mirroring
• HBA mode for supported direct-drive configurations

HPE ProLiant Gen9 Compatibility

HPE offered the P440ar as an embedded/internal Smart Array controller for selected ProLiant Gen9 rack and tower servers. HPE QuickSpecs specifically document P440ar configurations for systems including the DL360 Gen9, DL380 Gen9, DL560 Gen9 and ML350 Gen9.

Compatibility should be confirmed against the exact server model, system-board configuration, backplane and required SAS cabling before ordering.

Applications

• HPE ProLiant Gen9 internal SAS/SATA storage
• Hardware RAID configuration
• Enterprise server storage management
• RAID-protected operating-system and data volumes
• Server storage upgrades and replacement
• HPE ProLiant Gen9 refurbishment and maintenance

Replacement and Installation Considerations

The 749796-001 is a platform-specific AROC daughterboard rather than a universal PCIe RAID adapter. Before installation, verify the server model, system-board compatibility, storage backplane, SAS cabling and Smart Storage Battery requirements.

HPE also lists other P440ar board variants, including 775413-001 and 786760-001. These should not automatically be treated as interchangeable with 749796-001 because their physical and configuration characteristics can differ.
