Cisco CWDM-MUX8A 8-Channel CWDM Multiplexer/Demultiplexer Module – 1470–1610nm Passive Optical MUX/DEMUX
The Cisco CWDM-MUX8A is an 8-channel Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) passive multiplexer/demultiplexer module designed to combine and separate multiple optical wavelengths over a single pair of single-mode fiber strands.
The module supports eight CWDM wavelengths: 1470nm, 1490nm, 1510nm, 1530nm, 1550nm, 1570nm, 1590nm and 1610nm. It allows up to eight separate optical channels to be multiplexed onto one fiber pair and demultiplexed at the remote end. Cisco specifies dual fiber for both the network connection and the CWDM transceiver connections.

8-Channel CWDM Multiplexing
The Cisco CWDM-MUX8A enables eight separate optical channels to share a single pair of fiber strands. At the transmitting side, the individual CWDM wavelengths are multiplexed onto the common network fiber pair. At the receiving side, the wavelengths are demultiplexed back into their individual channels.
Supported CWDM Wavelengths
The module supports the standard Cisco CWDM wavelength set of 1470nm, 1490nm, 1510nm, 1530nm, 1550nm, 1570nm, 1590nm and 1610nm. Compatible Cisco CWDM optical transceivers are selected according to the corresponding wavelength.
Passive Optical Architecture
The CWDM-MUX8A is a passive optical component. It does not require electrical power and does not perform Ethernet or Fibre Channel signal conversion itself. The active optical transmission and reception functions are provided by compatible CWDM transceivers connected to the equipment-side ports.
Optical Monitoring
An integrated monitor port allows an optical power meter or optical spectrum analyzer to be connected for optical network monitoring and troubleshooting. Cisco specifies a maximum monitor insertion loss of 23dB.
CWDM Channel Insertion Loss
Cisco specifies a maximum 2.2dB channel insertion loss for the CWDM-MUX8A add/drop path and a minimum ±6.0nm filter passband width. These characteristics should be considered when calculating the complete optical link budget.
Cisco CWDM Transceiver Compatibility
The CWDM-MUX8A is designed to work with compatible Cisco CWDM GBIC and CWDM SFP transceivers. The equipment-side optical channel must use the corresponding wavelength—for example, a 1470nm CWDM transceiver should be connected to the 1470nm channel. Cisco documentation specifically recommends matching the CWDM OADM or MUX/DEMUX ports with CWDM transceivers of the equivalent wavelength.
Applications
- Enterprise CWDM backbone networks
- Campus optical network expansion
- Data center optical connectivity
- Metropolitan-area access networks
- Multi-service optical networks
- Gigabit Ethernet wavelength multiplexing
- Fibre Channel CWDM transport
- Network infrastructure requiring multiple services over a single fiber pair
Compatibility
The Cisco CWDM-MUX8A is designed for Cisco CWDM passive optical systems and compatible CWDM transceivers. Cisco's CWDM architecture uses wavelength-matched GBIC or SFP transceivers with the passive MUX/DEMUX. The module can be installed in the compatible Cisco CWDM chassis system.
Always verify the exact chassis, connector type, transceiver wavelength and optical link budget before deployment.
Important: MUX/DEMUX, Not an Active Transceiver
Although this product may be described by some sellers as an “OADM transceiver module,” the CWDM-MUX8A is a passive 8-channel multiplexer/demultiplexer. It does not contain an Ethernet transmitter or receiver and does not provide an independent electrical network interface. Its function is to combine and separate optical wavelengths within a CWDM system.
